Like Dew Every Morning..

A popular saying goes, “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.” There is truth in this. When we go through trials and deep sorrow, no amount of knowledge is going to comfort us. In the valley situation, we really want the love, support, care and compassion of people around us. The same is with our relationship with God. We need to know that God is with us when it hurts, when our lives are full of sorrow, pain and grief. We need to know that He cares and He understands.

The Bible tells us that our God is merciful, gracious, anxious to forgive, slow to anger and full of loving kindness and compassion. He does not treat us as our sins deserve. Every time we are down and going through hard times, we need to remember the past faithfulness and compassion of God towards us! This is our hope! Even in the present difficulties, heartbreak and trials, we can have renewed hope and wait for the Lord and He will come through! This hope should rise up from within us because of the character and nature of our God. Like dew every morning, His compassions are new every morning and they will never fail us! This was Jeremiah’s hope even in the midst of personal suffering and national catastrophes of the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of his people. In the midst of all the trials and hardship, Jeremiah centers his hope on God declaring that God is faithful and He will not fail!
Lamentations 3:20-26
20 I well remember them,
    and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind

    and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
    therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
    to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.

Jesus is not out of touch with our reality. He understands the path we take and He identifies with our struggles and pain. This is because He has walked the very path we walk and has felt every emotion that we face and yet He was able to overcome. When Jesus was on earth, we read often in the scriptures that Jesus was moved by compassion and He intervened on behalf of His people. Even as Jesus is in Heaven, He continues to be moved by compassion for us and He is forever interceding for us and offering us grace and mercy! That picture of Jesus interceding for me constantly for me to get through what I am going through, truly touches me and help me to rise up and overcome with His strength!
Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Yes, we can hold firmly to the faith we have even when it hurts, even when things are not going great. God is compassionate and He will make a way for us! In fact, He is already working at it, interceding for us and we need to together partner with Him and recognise and receive His mercy and grace for our situation. We need to understand that God has a good purpose with the suffering we endure.

The writer James says that even in Job’s situation, the Lord was full of compassion and mercy and brought about restoration. That’s why Job could say in Job 23:10, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold”. There is good purpose in all of the Lord’s dealings with us. As Spurgeon says, “If a man were to attack me with a knife I would resist him with all my strength, and count it a tragedy if he succeeded. Yet if a surgeon comes to me with a knife, I welcome both him and the knife; let him cut me open, even wider than the knife-attacker, because I know his purpose is good and necessary.”
James 5: 11
11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Do you wonder what God is up to in your present difficulties? Do you struggle to think how any good can come out of what you are going through and whether there is any purpose to your suffering? Be assured today that God cares more than anyone else for you. God is faithful and He is working out His good purpose in you. It is because of God’s loving kindness that we can trust Him! We too can persevere like Job because we know He is faithful and will never fail us! Let us persevere! Like dew every morning, His compassions fail not!
Psalm 145:8-9
The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
    slow to anger and rich in love.
The Lord is good to all;
    he has compassion on all he has made.
